Matthew 25:14-18 - Parable of the Talents
“For
it is just like a man who was about to take a journey, and he called his
servants together and entrusted them with his possessions. To
one he gave five talents, to another, two, and to another, one, each according
to his own ability; and then he went on his journey. The
one who had received the five talents went at once and traded with them, and he [made a profit and] gained five more.
Likewise the one who had two [made a
profit and] gained two more. But the
one who had received the one went and dug a hole in the ground and hid
his master’s money."
What comes to
mind when you read this parable? Did you
notice that the man gave talents (money) to his servants based on their
ability? One received five, one received
two, and one received only one. What
does that say about those individuals ability and their work ethic?
If you read the account of when the man
returned to see what his servants did with talents he'd given them, the ones
with five and two doubled theirs. But, what about the one who only
received the one talent? He, or she, didn't do
anything with what they were given.
Reading this
parable causes me to think about the resources God’s placed in my life. I wonder if the reason I haven’t experienced
the success I think I should have is because I’ve become a one talent servant
instead of a five talent servant.
What
about you, are you a one talent servant or a two talent servant?
